Hello and welcome to the Professional Development Page! The information on this page is intended to assist you with your professional growth and development. Not sure where to start? Just ask!

In these extraordinary times we find ourselves in, we’ve had to find ways to manage the challenges related to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Having to cancel the Northwest Clerks Institute Professional Development Program in June was an incredibly difficult decision. Yet, it was the responsible thing to do to protect and support the participants, speakers, facility workers and all of their families and communities.

As your Institute Director, I know how much you value educational and professional development. With that, I am happy to announce a special one-time virtual offering of the NCI Professional Development Series to fill the educational void left by our Program’s cancellation in June. These sessions will be in the interactive format you come to expect from the NCI-PD.

Register now and mark your calendars. Join me for the Northwest Clerks Institute’s Virtual Professional Development Series. We are offering eight (8) different sessions; two (2) sessions at the PD1 level; two (2) courses at the PD3 and PD4 level (exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis); and, four (4) courses open to all levels (PD1/2/3/4).

You can register for one or all of the appropriate level courses, the choice is yours. Each course is $100.  Each session is four-hours in total, broken up into two consecutive days and is approved by IIMC for two (2) CMC/MMC points. You will receive a certificate of completion for each session upon the successful completion of a learning assessment. Space will be limited and will be secured on a first registered-first paid basis.

All successful professionals sharpen their skills on a regular basis. Your job is multi-faceted and changing. New citizen demands, legal changes in procedures and new information technologies have increased the pace of your work and require you to plan and expedite many different tasks at once. You are the citizen‘s first point of contact in your local jurisdiction, and your elected officials count on you to make sure that your public meetings, records, elections and other special projects operate smoothly.

The job of Clerk is not getting any easier and you know the importance of keeping abreast of the latest issues and trends. The best way to do just that is by investing in continuing education and obtaining certification as a CMC and MMC.

The Northwest Clerks Institute (NCI) is a unique combination of state-of-the-art classroom training, high impact networking, and one-on-one mentoring with municipal leaders and instructors. The Institute provides a comprehensive curriculum in public administration management, technical skills and professional and personal development for municipal clerks in the states of Alaska, Oregon, and Washington.
If you just read that paragraph and said “Huh?” then try this description…
The Northwest Clerks Institute is an opportunity for you to spend one week with fellow municipal clerks from cities, counties, boroughs, districts, and transit authorities all over WA, OR and AK, learning, networking and making lifelong friends.
The program begins at 1:00 pm on Sunday with an Institute orientation, a learning session and time to get acquainted with other Institute participants and leaders. An opening reception will be held on Sunday evening.   Monday-Friday you will be in a classroom learning about various topics from local municipal leaders and instructors.  There will be leadership development classes to help you manage more effectively and practical, hands-on courses in target areas such as financial management, records management, legal issues, and other topics critical to your success. The days are jam-packed with learning, networking and of course, some fun in the evenings! The Institute ends at noon on Friday.
The 2021 dates for the Northwest Clerks Institute are:
Professional Development I      June 6 -11
Professional Development II  June 13-18
Professional Development III  June 20-25
Professional Development IV  June 14-17
The Institute is held at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.  Attendees are strongly encouraged to stay on-campus during the week; those who do make new connections and renew old ones, creating a strong professional support system.

Even if you already have your MMC designation, you should strongly consider signing up for PDIV this summer. PDIV is a unique experience allowing you to focus on a topic for 3 days with your peers in an open and honest setting.
